The Lord's Table by Andrew Murray
Today when we go to church to partake in the Communion, we do not think of it until we get to church. Then we think about it here and there during the service in between listening to the service and thinking about what is going on after church. Centuries ago, Christian spent a lot of time preparing themselves for this blessed event. They looked forward to it and prayerfully entered into it.
Rev. Andrew Murray would have us do the same. There are penalties for partaking of Communion without being in the proper state. Rev. Murray states these penalties and how to avoid them. He details how to prepare for Communion through prayer and self-examination. He puts forth a seven day preparation for Communion, details the Communion, and then puts forth a seven day follow-through to it.
For the seven days before Communion, Rev. Murray picked details of the Lord's Supper and examines them. At the end of each day's examination, he has a prayer to cover the details he has covered that day. For Communion, he details each aspect of it, ten (10) aspects in all. He then offers a Prayer of Thanksgiving to the Holy Trinity for the Lord's Supper. For the seven days after Communion, he details seven more aspects of Communion and Christian life. He then offers a prayer at the end of each day's details.
This book is perfect for the Christian who thinks that there is more to Communion than they have been taught or want more from Communion than they are currently getting. Christians want a better fellowship with Christ and a deeper relationship with Him will benefit greatly from this book. "The Lord's Table" is not for the Christian who wants to choke down the bread and gulp the cup and rush from the church to get back to their life.
